Six Sold-Out Shows, Three Nights: Filming Rob Schneider's New Comedy Special in Sarasota, FL

Filming Rob Schneider's new comedy special at McCurdy's Comedy Theatre in Sarasota, Florida, featuring Schneider performing on stage, backstage photos with the production crew, Rob meeting fans after the show, opening acts Chad Zumock and Arynne Wexler on stage, and behind-the-scenes at the venue with the McCurdy's team.

We had the privilege of filming six sold-out shows over three nights with Rob Schneider at McCurdy's Comedy Theatre in Sarasota, Florida. The footage is for a new comedy special that Schneider will be releasing, and we were brought on to handle the full multi-camera production. For anyone who has followed Schneider's career from his years on Saturday Night Live through his film work alongside Adam Sandler and his continued worldwide standup tour, this was the kind of project you do not say no to.

The Camera Setup

Comedy specials live and die on camera coverage. You need enough angles to give the editor options without cluttering the stage or distracting the performer. We ran a four-camera setup: a wide shot of the full stage, two tight shots focused on Rob to capture every expression and delivery, and a dedicated crowd camera to catch genuine audience reactions. Those reaction shots are critical in a comedy special. They sell the material to the viewer at home the same way the live audience sells it in the room.

Filming across six shows over three nights gave us the advantage of multiple passes at the same material. Every set has moments that land differently depending on the energy of the crowd, and having six complete recordings means the edit can pull the best version of every bit from whichever show captured it most naturally.

The Venue

McCurdy's Comedy Theatre has been a staple of the Sarasota comedy scene since 1988. The venue's intimate cabaret-style seating puts most of the audience within thirty-five feet of the stage, which creates an energy that translates directly to camera. A tighter room means louder laughs, closer reactions, and a more electric feel in the final product.

A big thank you to Les, Pam, Jason, and the entire McCurdy's team. They were incredibly accommodating with all of our equipment and went out of their way to make sure the filming was a success. When a venue works with you rather than around you, the production quality shows.

The Talent

Rob Schneider was as easy to work with as you could hope for on a shoot like this. Beyond being a consummate professional on stage, he took time after every single show to shake hands and take pictures with fans. That kind of generosity says a lot about someone, and it made the entire experience even more memorable.

We also had the pleasure of meeting his show openers, Arynne Wexler and Chad Zumock. Both were equally hilarious in their own right and did an excellent job warming up the crowd before Rob took the stage. A great opener sets the tone for the headliner, and these two delivered every night.

Why Comedy Specials Are Unique Production Work

Filming a comedy special is a different discipline than most of our projects. You are working in a dark room with stage lighting that you have limited control over. Audio has to be pristine because every pause, inflection, and audience reaction matters. Camera operators need to anticipate punchlines and timing to make sure the framing is right at the moment the joke lands, not a second after. And you are doing all of this across multiple performances while maintaining consistency so the editor can cut between shows seamlessly.

It is high-pressure, technically demanding work, and it is one of the most rewarding kinds of production we get to do.
