Filming a Private U.S. Capitol Tour with Dr. Frank Turek and Speaker Mike Johnson
Filming inside the United States Capitol requires more than professional camera equipment. It requires careful planning, a low-profile production strategy, and the ability to adapt when normal filmmaking tools cannot pass through security.
Trade Street Media recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to document a private U.S. Capitol tour organized by Dr. Frank Turek. The tour was led by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, who shared the history, stories, and significance of several remarkable spaces inside the Capitol.
It was an unforgettable experience personally and one of the most unusual event video production assignments our team has completed.
A Private Tour of the U.S. Capitol
The evening began with a pre-tour reception where attendees had an opportunity to meet one another before entering the Capitol.
Speaker Mike Johnson then joined the group, welcomed everyone, and provided an introduction to what we would experience during the tour.
From there, he personally guided us through several historically significant areas of the U.S. Capitol, including:
The Capitol Rotunda
National Statuary Hall, formerly the Old Hall of the House
The Speaker’s Office
The Speaker’s Balcony overlooking the National Mall and Washington Monument
The United States House of Representatives Chamber
Ending the tour inside the House Chamber was especially memorable. This is the room where the members of the U.S. House of Representatives meet, debate legislation, and conduct the legislative business of the country.
Standing inside a space seen so often in news coverage and historic photographs gave the evening a sense of importance that is difficult to communicate until you experience it personally.
Experiencing the Capitol with Speaker Mike Johnson
Speaker Johnson was an exceptional guide throughout the evening.
He combined his knowledge of American history and the institution of Congress with personal experiences from his time in public service. He also shared stories about different political figures, offered several entertaining impressions, and brought a great sense of humor to the tour.
What could have felt like a formal history lesson instead became a personal and engaging walk through the history of the United States government.
Speaker Johnson was generous with his time, gracious toward everyone in attendance, and clearly enjoyed sharing the Capitol with the group. His knowledge of the building and the events that have taken place within it made this a one-of-a-kind experience that I will not forget.
Adapting Our Video Production for Capitol Security
From a video production standpoint, this project presented a unique challenge.
Security inside the U.S. Capitol is understandably strict. We were unable to bring the Sony cinema cameras, professional lenses, stabilizers, and larger audio systems that we would normally use for an event production.
Instead, Andrew and I designed a compact, low-profile filming setup built around two DJI Osmo Pocket 3 cameras.
The Osmo Pocket 3 gave us several important capabilities in a very small package:
4K video recording
Built-in three-axis stabilization
Strong performance in changing lighting conditions
A discreet form factor appropriate for a secure environment
Direct compatibility with the DJI Mic 2 wireless audio system
Although these cameras are much smaller than our normal production equipment, they allowed us to capture stabilized, high-resolution footage without disrupting the tour or drawing unnecessary attention.
This was exactly the type of situation where the smallest camera was not merely a compromise. It was the right production tool for the environment.
Capturing Content for YouTube and Social Media
We filmed the tour horizontally in 4K for the primary long-form YouTube video.
While filming, we intentionally composed each shot with enough space around the speakers and other important subjects to create vertical edits later. Recording in 4K gave our editing team sufficient resolution to crop portions of the horizontal footage into a 9:16 frame for Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, YouTube Shorts, and other social media platforms.
This approach allowed a single production to generate both:
* A complete widescreen video documenting the Capitol tour
* Multiple vertical social media clips featuring individual stories and memorable moments
Planning for both formats during production is much more effective than attempting to force horizontally framed footage into a vertical composition after the event.
Recording Clear Audio Without Miking the Speaker
Audio was another important consideration.
Dr. Turek wore a DJI Mic 2 transmitter connected wirelessly to one of the Osmo Pocket 3 cameras. This allowed us to record his commentary and interactions clearly as the group moved through the Capitol.
Due to security protocols and the nature of the event, we did not place a wireless microphone directly on Speaker Johnson.
Instead, I mounted a second DJI Mic 2 receiver and microphone system on the camera positioned toward him. I remained as close to Speaker Johnson as the tour permitted and carefully maintained the camera’s position throughout the evening.
This gave us remarkably clear audio without placing equipment on him or interfering with the tour.
It is a good example of why professional event production is not simply about owning expensive equipment. Successful production requires understanding the environment, anticipating limitations, and selecting a workflow that can still produce strong results.
Planning for Production Limitations
We knew before arriving that this would not be a conventional video shoot.
The production plan had to account for:
Capitol security requirements
Limited equipment access
Constant movement throughout the building
Rapidly changing lighting conditions
Restricted opportunities to reposition participants
The need to remain unobtrusive
Capturing usable audio without a traditional sound setup
Delivering content in both horizontal and vertical formats
We prepared as much as possible before the event and then adapted throughout the tour as conditions changed.
That balance between preparation and flexibility is central to how Trade Street Media approaches event videography. Cameras and equipment matter, but the ability to solve problems in real time is often what determines whether an important moment is successfully captured.
Dinner at the Capitol Hill Club
Following the Capitol tour, the group walked to the Capitol Hill Club for dinner and an evening reception.
It was an opportunity for attendees to continue their conversations, reflect on everything they had experienced, and spend additional time together after an extraordinary tour of the nation’s Capitol.
A Washington, D.C. Production We Will Never Forget
To say we enjoyed filming this private Capitol tour would be an understatement.
Projects like this are exactly why we love event video production. They give us the opportunity to document meaningful experiences, preserve moments that cannot be recreated, and find creative solutions when the production environment presents unusual challenges.
Although the equipment restrictions required us to work differently, they did not prevent us from capturing the evening with excellence.
We embraced the limitations, selected the right tools, and created a production strategy that allowed Dr. Turek and his audience to experience this remarkable tour through both long-form video and social media content.
